If you have the idea of saving a little money on a payroll accountant, and doing it yourself, you’re going to need a little help tracking down an appropriate course. There are many ways you can do this, some more respected than others, but if you’re looking to become your own payroll accountant, read on.

The first, and most obvious way of becoming your own payroll accountant is to learn exactly what is necessary before you get your hands dirty with ink. This can be done a number of ways. You could get your friendly neighborhood tax accountant to show you the ropes, if they have a background as a payroll accountant. It’s worth remembering that all you need is the skill and knowledge to become your own accountant. Regardless of how many people recommend that you get certified, you need no certification whatsoever. This is why it’s so popular at the moment. Becoming your own payroll accountant is, if you have the time, a very effective way of streamlining your business. It’s a reasonably straightforward jump for most people with their own businesses, as they’ve more than likely been doing something similar for some time. This method will see you ‘muddling through’ for a while before you pick up the real knack for it though.

The other favourite way of attaining the skills required to become a payroll accountant is to attend a specialized course. What exactly do these courses teach you though? The main aim of these is to give you the ability to set up, change and modernize your accounts. This includes, purchases, invoices, bank statements, budgets and reports. For the most part, payroll accountant courses will be an entirely different animal to taxation accounting courses, and are a good deal easier for the layman to understand.

What should you look for in such a course though? The most important thing for you is that the course is willing to deal with your own situation. This mean that if you want to, you can ask specific questions, even outside the classroom, about specific things in your particular field. This could include freelancer payment regulations, dishonoured cheques, or even a little about taxation. If your course doesn’t do this, it’s unlikely to allow you to create the knowledge that you need to become your own payroll accountant.

Courses like this are usually quite a fun thing to do (amongst accounting circles anyway), and require a fair knowledge of basic math. If you have a real issue with numbers, it’s best not to plump for something like this. You can always ask the potential school for an entry test, to see if your aptness with numbers is sufficient.

Becoming your own payroll accountant has many benefits, and only one real drawback, namely time. If you have enough of that, it’s well worth looking into, as if will give you a better handle of your business from the inside out.

So, you’re looking for an accountancy firm? What kinds of qualifications and ratings should you be looking for? Offering limitless access to your personal and professional finances is not something you want to be doing with just anyone, so how do you go about finding the right kind of accountancy firm?

Well, first off, far and away the best way of identifying a decent accountancy firm is to get a personal recommendation. This has two benefits over every other method. Firstly, it’s easy to see exactly how good they are. Have they saved your friends a good deal of money: have they, in essence, paid for themselves and then some. Ultimately, that’s the most important factor beyond being trustworthy. If you’re paying more than you save, there’s little point in having a specialist accounting firm, past mere ease.

So find out from friends exactly how good their accountants are, and what they can offer. Of course a small outfit may not suit your needs if you’re looking for a company to take on the tax concerns of a larger enterprise. Similarly, if you’re just looking for someone to deal with your personal finances, then you may find many places unwilling to take you on. Finding the right accountancy firm for your requirements – one that can offer you the most time and consideration for your buck – is an important concern.

There are national and commercial bodies which can recommend an accountancy firm to you. These include the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, the National Institute of Accountants, and the Association of Taxation and Management Accountants. Those three are probably the biggest, and are responsible for a majority of the accreditation that happens in Australia. Getting in touch with them will help you immensely, as they will be able to offer you advice on where to find the most suitable accountancy firm.

Remember, accreditation is not the only thing you need to think about when hiring an accountant. You need to actually get on with them. Bear in mind that once you’ve passed over all your details and finances to a firm, that isn’t the end of the story. You may be content with simply leaving it at that, and speaking to them once per year. That won’t save you money though. The whole idea of getting an accountancy firm is that you save money, and if you have regular and candid discussions with them, you’ll save more than you would otherwise.

Also, it’s worth looking to see if you can speak with clients of an firm before you hire them. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and unless a firm are doing a good job with the bottom line of their clients, they don’t deserve new business, regardless of how effective their marketing is. Remember, hiring an accountancy firm is an important part of your life, so do as much ground work as possible before taking the plunge.

What exactly are your accountancy requirements? How much accounting do you need? Are you making the tax system work for you rather than against you? Is accounting a nightmare for you, or are you happy to take an interest in your books? All these questions are important to answer before you go out and find an accountant.

Bear in mind, in many cases it’s not a legal requirement to have an accountant, it’s only required that you do your taxes, this. Learning exactly how to work your accounts yourself may give you a much better insight into how your business is running, so it that may be a better option for you. Of course, much of this depends not only on the size of your business, but the nature of it, and indeed your level of interest in the accounting side. Remember, accounting and finance are two different things, and shouldn’t necessarily be bunched together.

What exactly does an accountant do for you anyway. You may previously have thought of them as people that know how to work the tax system, and make you more money than they cost you. Or you may think of them as a necessary evil, someone to throw receipts at and hope for the best. In fairness, both can be true, but your accountancy requirements might warrant a closer look.

An accountant should be part of your daily life. Major life changes should be reported to them, as it may impact how they can limit the taxes you pay. Your accountancy requirements one year may be entirely different the next, and as such, if your accountant doesn’t know, they can’t help you. The basic idea of having an accountant, be it for personal or professional life, is to reduce the amount of tax you are paying. This can be done retroactively, with rebates, actively, with your yearly tax returns, or pro-actively with them suggesting ways or decisions that will impact your tax strategy positively.

It’s well worth, for example, getting an accountant to be involved in the financing of your children. Very often long term methods of avoiding inheritance tax, or arranging education or trusts is an excellent way of reducing the tax burden on your family. Similarly, moving house, or even country can be an excellent way of massively reducing your tax burden, but you may never know if you don’t involve your accountant in it.

This is all a moot point if you have a bad accountant. Knowing your accountancy requirements is just the first step, once you do that, you need to find a credible, trustworthy accountant who is willing to take you onto his books. Ensure that they are not overworked, or are the kind of ‘phone-it-in’ firm that won’t care too much as long as they do an acceptable job. Fulfilling your accountancy requirements is not an easy job, but it’s a worthwhile one, as it should save you plenty of money in the long run.

It’s important to remember that you should Find An Accountant well before you actually need one. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, accountancy is so important to your business, that leaving it until the last minute could very well leave you scrabbling around the very worst of the bunch when you need a good accountant the most. Secondly, there is a good possibility that your accountant will be able to inform you of any changes to accounting practices, meaning that what you thought was the most applicable way to run your business might actually not be. Find An Accountant early and save money and time.

Remember that accountancy is a well regulated and qualified business, meaning you should find it too hard to Find An Accountant. It’s amongst the oldest in the world, and has a good degree of tradition to it. That said, to Find An Accountant, or a good one at least, means one with little pomp, as they will treat you in a very down to earth way. Bad accountants will try to bamboozle you at every turn, adding mumbo-jumbo terminology wherever possible to confuse you into thinking their work is more complex than it is.

Far and away the best way to Find An Accountant is to go via two methods. First off, the personal recommendation route. This is the favoured route for many when looking to Find An Accountant, as your business accounts are not something you wish to put in the hands of someone you don’t know at least through a couple of handshakes anyway. The huge amount of associations of accountants gives you another route into the selection of an accountant. This may not be as personal as a recommendation, but it is as reliable, and offers you a body to complain through if your work is not dealt with appropriately.

There are a good few things to consider when looking for an accountant. Probably the most obvious is the size and nature of your business. Perhaps here, your specialist trade association can offer specific advice on accountancy. Does the accountant provide all the services you might require? This is a very important point. Having two accountants can sometimes be worse than none at all.

Checking the specific qualifications is a must. Anyone can call themselves an accountant, but remember that some qualification many not be qualifications at all.
